Active Lives for Older Adults

Older adults, individuals 55 and above, are a significant and growing segment of our communities. All seniors benefit from engaging in Y activities that enhance connections, decrease a sense of isolation, and improve overall well-being. Maintain your health and functional ability with programs designed especially for the needs of Seniors. We begin to lose bone density, balance and coordination as we age. The good news is that there is something we can do about it! Strength training and creating a fitness regime can deter or prevent these issues from occurring. Our Active Older Adult and SilverSneaker® classes will teach you how to build muscle strength, endurance and increase mobility. Everyday activities will become easier, posture will improve and you’ll look and feel great!

The YMCA of Metropolitan Chattanooga offers fitness and exercise programs specifically geared toward older adults, such as Active Older Adult (AOA) classes, land and water-based arthritis classes and Silver Sneakers®. As you age, regular exercise is more important than ever to your overall health. Before starting an exercise program you should consult your doctor. New to class? Arrive a little early so our instructor can give you some pointers.


SilverSneakers® is a fitness program for seniors provided to you at no cost by your health care plan. With SilverSneakers®, you have a fitness membership with free access to all basic YMCA amenities including SilverSneakers® classes and assistance from a designated staff member.  SilverSneakers® is a nationwide program, so you can take classes and work out when you are traveling. SilverSneakers® members may use any participating location in the nation.
